Growing up between African and American cultures can be a rich experience, but it can also bring challenges around identity, belonging, family expectations, and communication. Young people may face experiences their parents never encountered growing up in Africa, making it difficult for families to fully understand what each other is going through.
At school and among peers, some young people may struggle with fitting in, rejection, cultural identity, or feeling different. At home, differences in expectations and communication can leave both parents and children feeling misunderstood. When these struggles remain unspoken, they can affect a young person’s confidence and emotional well-being.
This October, Jedidiah Dream Initiative will bring African parents, African immigrant youth, and children of African immigrants together for Between Two Worlds, an educational webinar designed to help families better understand each other’s experiences.
Through open conversation and culturally sensitive mental health education, we will explore identity and belonging, common parent-child misunderstandings, and practical ways families can strengthen communication and create a home environment where young people feel safe sharing their struggles.
Parents care deeply about their children, but it is not always easy to know when a young person is experiencing more than the normal challenges of growing up. With guidance from qualified mental health professionals, families will learn about signs of emotional distress, when additional support may be needed, and how to seek appropriate professional help.
